Once I’d finished, I liked it more and it left me pondering a number of things about Australia’s past, present and future in relation to Aboriginal people. This one is uninvolving, but worse than that, it is actually irritating.
The Stone Age marks a period of prehistory in which humans used primitive stone tools. Later Stone Age tools are more diverse. He is supposed to be an enigmatic man in tune with nature and full of mystery and charisma.
Some of the moments were quite gripping and Alex Miller has a lovely way of describing the atmosphere of a place.
As a positive, the author does evocatively create a sense of place. All readers should be warned that this is actually a philosophical novel hidden within a romance novel. If I read another description of Bo rolling a cigarette in the Pajero I am going to scream. Soooo slooowww! Meanwhile, another prisoner is planning an elaborate escape, and a seemingly hardened teenager called The Casbah Kid is facing a death sentence. I just don’t get this character. The transcendence of racial differences and reaching a point of peace and acceptance in empathy. Had a bit of difficulty getting hold of this one: had to order my copy used from England.
The first of these plots follows the developing romantic relationship between Bo and Rennie, who know each other as children and are reunited after Annabelle’s husband cheats on her and she leaves Melbourne seeking emotional refuge in her family’s abandoned home in Townsville…
Many of the large Ice Age animals went extinct. I'd like to know if the author received funding based on the repeated, repeated, repeated (sorry) mention of the 4wd they used, amongst other brand names mentioned. (Alex?). The plot involves a political activist in Cape Town, George, who is sent to jail briefly, and finds himself in the middle of a variety of prison dramas. Beautiful descriptions and some poetic passages worthy of the Miles Franklin. As a whitefella writing about black and white history in this country, Alex Miller often goes where angels dare not tread. Reminds me of Winton, Malouf and White rolled into one.
A lot of reviews are negative about it but I think they miss the point; there is a monotony and rhythm to life in inland Queensland that Miller has captured well. Beautiful descriptions of Queensland Australia. Need another excuse to treat yourself to a new book this week? Stone Age humans hunted large mammals, including wooly mammoths, giant bison and deer. Top Notes are easy to read, providing analysis of issues and discussion of important ideas contained in the texts.
I've been meaning to read this book, or one of La Guma's, for ages, and wasn't particularly looking forward to it, because I've read a lot of critiques of his writing, indeed of 1960s South African "struggle" writing in general--its supposedly too obviously political, producing semi-sensationalist fables of good and evil in which there are no surprises. Turns out, I was totally gripped by this novel, and thought it was excellent. 2002 Apart from the fact that the author could not mention Bo without detailing some connection to smoking, which was beyond monotonous in itself, he was portrayed as a quiet, reflective man. What were the Miles Franklin judges thinking? I enjoyed it both times, perhaps more with this second reading.Unfortunately, after a really promising beginning, this book went downhill fast for me. Bland characters in a bland story.
