Tell us what you think!Pennsylvania (south-central), United StatesI had my first taste of an Arkansas Black apple last week. Like all triploid apples it produces sterile pollen and is thus incapable of pollinating other apple varieties.

Tart, crunchy, sweet but not too sweet. These knock Granny out, better flavor and DEFINETELY firm!!! Thanks for taking the time to post this info!The name is quite apt as the apple is very dark red in color with some specimens appearing almost black or purplish, especially when grown in full sun. Rock hard, crisp, and sweet/tart.

They are the hardest, and most flavorful apple I've ever tasted!

Wish they were more widely available.I got one of these trees as a semi-dwarf from Starks 3 years ago. Have purchased a StarkSpur Arkansas Black tree. Very fast grower and fruit the first year!I have 2 of these in my little farm orchard and my husband and girls LOVE that the apples can sit for months in the fridge and still be good.

Oh, great eating apple too!I bought these at the orchard today. In addition, Arkansas Black is a wonderful cooking and processing apple. I have a young espaliered tree and this is the second year for these apples. Since I discovered them I've introduced many other people this fragrant variety.

It wouldn't be complete without it.Last year I bought a mountain home that had 2 very old apple trees in the yard.

We do not harvest the apples until the very last of Oct. or 1st of Nov. - rare for the temp to go below 29-30 before that time, but if it did we would simply throw something over the tree - one major reason for getting a semi-dwarf.

The result of this good deed is that I have pick up their bushels as well :)Just incredible pies - high pectin, self thickening, cooks rapidly. They make a tasty apple pie. Would they grow well in the midlands of SC? The taste was so unique and wonderful, I have never forgotten it.

Very good! The band reached the height of its fame in the 1970s with four charting albums released in that decade. Its deep red skin can be very tough, a quality that protects and preserves the apple so well when packed in storage bins for extended periods of time. They are almost black now. They develop a very "greasy" skin in storage.

Los Rios Ranchos has them. After that shock, it's sweet, the smallest bit tart and crispy.

This apple has no historical records of being propagated in our area. Also, polinates just fine with a Golden Delicious.I've had one of these trees in my yard for several years, and never knew what kind it was until now!!!

The flavor improvement after an extended period of cold storage can be very dramatic for a lot of different apples.For those cynics who would normally “thumb their nose” at a basket of freshly-picked Arkansas Black apples I suggest they give this old variety another chance. Or would the pollen be too similar and pollination would fail? I have scratched out of the tall grass coverd in snow apples that looked like the Arkansas Black you show the old men I hunted with said they were Black Ben’s. And, even though I'm really picky about the way an apple tastes, this apple convinced me to go back for more. Tough skin but a deep, wine-honey flavor and sharp tartness.

Macintosh wwere always my favorite until these...Those grown in the mountains are hard as a rock when first picked and need to mellow in storage a month before you can sink your teeth into it, and thus make great keepers, storing fine in the crisper bin for months. Perhaps more than any other apple I grow or have grown, the flavor (at least as it comes off the tree) varies year-to-year with the Black.

The Arkansas Black apple is believed to have originated in the 1870’s from a Winesap seedling in an orchard owned by Mr. Brathwaite in Benton County, Arkansas.

Their style is punctuated by multiple guitar players and the raspy voice and on-stage antics of vocalist Jim "Dandy" Mangrum. This apple is wonderful for my area in Hot Southern Utah and is definitively under loved .The Black Arkansas is indeed back at the Dekalb Farmer's Market. The lowland ones do not keep anything like the mountain-grown ones however. It's great smell and color intrigued me. !A customer gave me a dz of these the first of Nov. last yr. She talked about how good they were as how I had never heard of them.She said to let them age several weeks. They ripen here around Thanksgiving. However, after an extended period of storage, the apple undergoes a dramatic change and becomes a rather fine dessert apple.

This year, had to run them right up the night of the first hard-frost to get to the point where they would pick without ripping off too many spurs. I will definitely look for saplings to purchase. They were still rock-hard but quite tasty! I put them in a cool spot and still had fresh apples to make an apple cake for Valentine's day! I hope Vons doesn't stop carrying it. I’ve been growing it here in Arkansas for 35 years now, and I’ll add another reason for the discrepancies in perceived quality among consumers of this heirloom variety. We are buying a place in north Ar.

Used to be available from a local orchard but must travel to western NC mountains now. Can't wait.Today (Nov. 16th) I picked the most beautiful Arkansas Black apples.
