I'm old enough to remember when Star Trek first came out, and I thought it was fantastic. I suggest giving this film a chance. It strikes the right tone and fits nicely into the The CGI/effects generally look good, the costumes fit the time period, and the makeup for the aliens is believable. Her interests range from Star Trek, to history, archaeology, languages, fantasy and sci-fi, politics, and cats.Overall, the plot and writing of this film are absolutely solid. To my great surprise I really enjoyed the film and was even more surprised because I've just read it was made on a budget of a mere $22,500 raised through a Kickstarter scheme.
Galactic alien race works with StarFleet to solve a massive problem of the legendary Iconian benevolent race competes with a militaristic alien race for control of the known universe. The fact that it's been done on an absolute shoe-string budget by commercial Hollywood standards plus that the crew and cast are amateurs means that one is inclined to be generous with the critique.
